Italy entered World War 1 in May, 1915: Carlo enlisted and was sent as a junior officer to the front in the Italian Alps. After months of trench warfare, Carlo was wounded and taken to military hospital in Turin. As the war ended, he finished law school and was promptly hired by a well-known law firm in Rome. Results of the young professional were mixed, mostly because he apparently hated this job, which he quit without regrets.
